New Procedure for Accessing CARC Login Servers

Posted on May 26, 2022 by Dani Cannella

0.0.0.1 Accessing CARC login servers will now require USC network connection.

After the completion of maintenance on Monday, June 13th at 8:00 AM PST, CARC login servers will only be accessible through the USC network, either via a direct connection from the campus network or a USC VPN (connect.usc.edu, sslvpn.usc.edu, or vpn.usc.edu). Going forward, any users attempting to log in to CARC’s discovery 1&2 or endeavour 1&2 from off-campus will be required to connect to a VPN using the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client first.

At this time, hpc-transfer 1&2 will remain unchanged. Users will not be required to connect to USC’s network before accessing this server.

This update has several benefits. Connecting through the USC network eliminates the need to use Duo Two-Factor Authentication to access CARC systems since the authentication process has already been completed during the network connection. Although this changes the user experience for logging in to CARC systems, we believe that this will provide better security and allow for easier connections through the terminal.

Instructions for setting up a VPN connection on Windows and Mac OS can be found here. A guide for setting up a VPN connection on Linux can be found on our Connecting to a USC VPN page.

New users or collaborators outside of USC will need to submit a ticket to gain access to the Research VPN.
